DESCRIPTION A fresh take on an iconic design, our Pele Occasional Chair is a reincarnation of upcycled oil drums creatively transformed into a stylish lounge piece. Traditional repurposing of oil drums is a machine-driven, resource-intensive process involving large amounts of water, power, and chemicals. However, our designs are a product of sustainable repurposing practices embraced by Indonesian artisans who transform recovered drums with minimal processing, using little more than shears and grinders. Bright colors and graphics from the oil drums are preserved and integrated into the design. Curating patterns and colors with an artful eye, the craftspeople shape the panels and weld them to steel frames. Each resulting chair is a uniquely artistic piece. Their color blocks and graphic juxtapositions are reminders of a previous industrial life, even as they take on new, elevated forms.
